Want a career in Gaming? Want to work for Sony?

After meeting with the lovely Hannah Bunce (@hannardynamite) this morning, we thought it would be a shame for you to not hear what she had to say. So this blog post is a story, of how Hannah chose gaming as her career.

After studying Psychology at Southampton Solent university Hannah became extremely bored. She wanted something completely new, something she never dreamt of doing before. This is when her best friend encouraged her to take a course in Computer Games Development.

“At this point, I had never played a computer game in my life”

Three years later Welsh born Hannah, soon after graduating has landed a job up in Liverpool at Sony as a games tester (I think all of us here at Girl Geeks are a little bit jealous).

Her work at Sony is in parallel with the San Diego office, meaning she works in the evenings instead of the usual 9-5 day, proving that this industry is as exciting as ever don’t you think?

Hannah told us that it has never been a problem for her being a women in the gaming industry. She felt accepted in her university, even though she was the only girl in her class.

By speaking with her briefly, she seemed extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the industry, we asked a few questions;

What is it like working at Sony, Does it compare to what you thought it would be like?

“It is the total opposite of what I thought it would be like… in a good way. Everyone I have spoke to has told me that even though I am going to be a games tester, I would not be playing games that much. However, everyday.. I have been playing games! maybe it’s because I’m new. Maybe the real work starts tomorrow!”

What advice would you give to a 14-16 yr old gamer wanting to be apart of this ever growing industry?

” Firstly, don’t be afraid of trying new things. There are a thousand and one resources online that help you create your first games, use them, and practice”

“Everyone is very welcoming, so do not be afraid to enter this industry, never take anything too personally and take pride in your work”

We would like to welcome Hannah to Liverpool and hope that she will attend future events with us, and this growing community.

Maria Stukoff, who also work’s at Sony, is going to be our keynote speaker at our event August 16th. To meet us, Maria and people like Hannah please register:
