Why you should be a girl geek in Liverpool

It was difficult to decide what kind of post to write to relaunch the Liverpool Girl Geeks blog. There are so many things we want to share on here that we decided to ensure that readers and members of the girl geek community in Liverpool knew exactly why they should get involved.

We thought we’d make a list of why we think you should join us and become a girl geek…

1. It will help broaden your skills.

Being a geek doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be glued to your PS4 24/7 (although we totally support that)! You could be obsessed with mastering new social media channels or interested in learning how to design a successful website. Whatever your geeky passion is, by joining a community which encourages girls to develop in areas such as programming and digital media, you’ll gain plenty of knowledge and maybe even become an expert yourself.

2. Liverpool is the best city to pursue your geeky passions in.

Liverpool is known for embracing new and original ideas which might be a little out of the ordinary. Take the Baltic Creative, an area designed to provide space for smaller, creative projects, or Independent Liverpool, set up to promote local indie businesses. If you’re into something a little bit different, you’re in the right place. Chances are there’s already something set up in your field of interest that you can join, or someone who will jump at the chance to get involved in your idea.

3. We’re supportive of each other.

As women are in short supply in sectors such as gaming and technology, we want to create a community to encourage and inspire women to embrace their geeky side by offering support and advice for girls who are interested in breaking into these more male dominated industries or are simply interested in learning more about them.

We’re looking to get more girls involved in our group through new events and by sharing your passions and views in order to create an exciting, accepting community for the girl geeks of Liverpool.

Over the next few months we’ll be posting interviews with inspiring women, career advice and reviews, and we’d love to know what you’d like to see here. Let us know in the comments what you’re interested in or send us a tweet @lpoolgirlgeeks and you might see it here very soon!
